TASCAM Portacapture X8 Teardown and mini review
The Portacapture X8 is one of only a few handheld field recorders on the market that capture audio in 32-bit float. I wanted to know what hardware is under the hood and how this thing works. Also included are a few thoughts and gripes that I have with this device.

I was looking for ways to help my tacky paint situation and came across two solutions. Water and powder. I opted with the water method first, since it'll produce less mess. This did help, but not fully. So for me, it worked partially and will try this method again in future projects where the paint ends up tacky. Thanks for the tip! Now I know how to solve this issue if it comes up again.

The sap solidified because you didn’t heat it long enough or heat it enough to have the ideal viscosity you’d need to strain the debris out. It’s cool you’re still trying something new to you like this though.

I dissolve it in alcohol first then strain it to remove the trash. Then I sit it in sun light to evaporate most of the alcohol. Then I heat it on my hot plate to get rid of any remaining alcohol and water. While it's hot I pour it through a automotive paint strainer.

I used the exact Enamel brand he showed in the video on some metal exterior light fixtures. They were still tacky 2 days later. I tried this water hack and IT ACTUALLY WORKED! I’m not sure it would work on non enamel paints, but it definitely works on ENAMEL. Thank you!!!

How much water? Do you soak in water? Do you light spray? Do you mist spray? Do you do it within an hour? Do you wait 24 hours? How do you know if the spray paint will take water it won't take off the paint?

Cool video. Just a heads up though... your lash adjustment changes after the head is torqued. Micrometer will get you close but accurate true measurement is mase with the feeler gauge between the cam lobe and the shim.

Hello, just a suggestion but this worked for me - if you live somewhere that has dry heat or drier winters than spray painting some surfaces like metal will remain tacky. As you will have noticed he said ‘humidity’ at the end of video. You can do 2 things - 1, if you have a steamer that spurts out steam then quickly go over your item with the steamer (dont Saturate it and also don’t get so close like you would with cleaning w/ steam - you just want the steam to cover your piece. OR 2, if your steamer is a POS like mine then just drag whatever you need to have hot humidity in it into your bathroom while you have a shower (note make sure to close your windows and turn exhaust fan off, remove as soon as you finish shower so it’s not soaking wet or pooling water) Hope this helps!

Yes, thank you! We use Rosin on our Bow Hair because as it is stripped off the block of Rosin, the microscopic barbs on the Siberian Horse's Tail Hair abraid the Rosin, heating it and the inherent abrasive quality of the bow hair cause our strings to vibrate. As the bow travels across my strings it sheds some of these barbs and it settles as white dust on my Violin etc. As the Rosin dust literally flies when we play loud in the orchestra 😊

How’s it holding up after 4 years? Do you use it a lot? I love the concept, my biggest concern would be the weight with all the hardware but that spring hinge mechanism is brilliant! Look forward to hearing about it!

You can also use Vegetable oil and salt. Most plastic doesn't mix well with the oil so when it melts it'll float so use something to scrape the plastic, and the oil will keep it from sticking back on. Make sure to put enough salt because the plastic will stick on the salt as you rub it off with a spoon while the oil starts getting thiner. When it is still hot go outside amd dump it, make sure not to put it in the sink or splash it with water until you get most of the salt and oil off of it. These camping pans get hot and cold really fast so you might stick the plastic back on if you put water on it straight away without dumping it all out. (Hope this helps. It worked for me at least, i used a wooden spoon the scrape it and used a good amount pf salt with the oil)

Things like that you have to press the button to play the recording is nothing really. Try Zoom H8. In the music mode there you simply cannot play any recording except the last one recorded. There is no such possibility. Not to mention how hard it is to use the mixer and anything that you have to control through the shitty touch screen. The interface of that device is a freaking nightmare and it makes Tascam X-8 a recorder of the future.

I've owned this device for 1-2 years and use it almost daily. It's great. It's the cheapest device available with the functionality it has. So Tascam did things well, as they usually do. It could be better, fortunately mostly through software so I hope Tascam spend some time releasing one for it.

I actually didn't realize these hot water heaters had this substantial of a tank inside. I think you could build a halfway decent indoor stove heater out of a pair of these. There's a stove design where people use 55 gallon drums, 1 stacked on top of each other horizontally, but they don't last long because they're such thin metal. These would last a bit longer I think. A flue duct goes from the bottom barrel to top one at the back. The flue comes out the top one at the front so you get an s-shaped path for the smoke and heat to travel through. Fresh air goes in through door, hot fire puts heat into the draft, it goes up into the top barrel and exchanges heat before going out the flue. Sometimes they'll have pipes going through the top barrel to increase the efficiency, but you've already got one in there on these. You would probably want more though. My brother scored one of these but it was made out of 1/2 inch thick steel pipe, so it will last forever. He gave it to my dad, who used it for years in the shop, then he died and my brother inherited it back. It's still in service, probably 50 years in total now.

My dad taught me this trick years ago painting a cube van. He actually ran the garden hose over it several times in the evening after to harden it and make sure we didn't damage it assembling the trim the next day. Thanks for the reminder because I had completely forgotten.

OK, weirdly, this really works! It’s so counterintuitive. I had some shelves drying in my plant room with the humidifier off. In the south-facing sunny window on a warm day. And then more days. Still sticky! Turned humidifier on and sticky was gone in a few hours. Thanks so much! I’m going to check out some of your other videos.

Excellent idea. I have a question! Wouldn't it be too late to further weaken the metal with Fire? (sorry 65yr gal trying to make an outdoor canning/grill/smoker and ran into this idea! and clueless as to reusing an older heater, is it rotted out? Mine is 12 yrs old, just bought this old house this past summer and I know the anode rod's never been replaced cuz they put it right under the center beam (ugh, ordered a flex type rod and its proper bit and crossing fingers). Anyway, back to the question... ?
